Returned Oil Based Muds are usually centrally treated to recover the oil and ensure a solid waste with a minimum of remnant oil. The oil Industry is interested to close the loop of the Base Oil as used in exploration. For below mentioned reasons still huge amounts of virgin Base Oil are pushed into the loop, whilst recovered Base Oils are send to incineration.
- The oil after this recovery process contains increased amounts, as compared to virgin base oils, of BTEX. The BTEX is picked up by the Oil Based Mud during the drilling process.
- Complaints about the strong odor of the recovered Base Oil has made it difficult for mud companies to
handle the material in their plants.
In cooperation with CMF Services and Brilliant Water Solutions in The Netherlands a treatment system for used Base Oils has been developed dealing with above mentioned issues.
