Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, with a concentration of other hydrocarbons (usually ethane) as well as small amounts of impurities such as carbon dioxide. Natural gas is used in many applications as an energy source and is a feedstock in creating products such as fertilizers.
Natural gas must be cleaned in order to meet the specifications of marketable natural gas. The by-products of processing include propane, ethane, butanes, pentanes and higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulphide (can be converted into sulfur), carbon dioxide, water vapor, and sometimes helium and nitrogen.
